What causes and how to solve the phenomenon of screen blockage in screen printing

Screen blockage in screen printing, also known as clogging, refers to the phenomenon that the through-hole part of the screen printing plate cannot transfer ink to the substrate during printing. Today MAISHI Group would like to discuss this issue with you.

One reason for screen blockage is the nature of the substrate. Screen printing substrates are diverse, and the surface characteristics of the substrate are also a factor in screen blockage. For example, paper, wood, and fabric substrates have low surface smoothness and poor surface strength, making them prone to dusting and shedding during printing, resulting in screen blockage.

Another reason is the temperature, humidity, and ink properties in the printing workshop. Screen printing workshops require a certain temperature and relative humidity. If the temperature is high and the relative humidity is low, the volatile solvents in the ink will evaporate quickly, and the ink viscosity will increase, causing blockage. If the workshop is shut down for too long, it can also result in screen blockage. In addition, low environmental temperature and poor ink flowability can also cause screen blockage.

The spacing between the screen printing plate and the substrate can also cause screen blockage. The spacing cannot be too small (3-5mm for font size), as the screen printing plate cannot separate from the substrate after printing, and ink will be stuck to the bottom of the screen printing plate when it is lifted, leading to screen blockage.

Lastly, ink properties can cause screen blockage. The choice of screen mesh size and pore area, compared with the particle size of the ink, can lead to blockage. Using high-quality ink and controlling the ink viscosity and drying speed can help prevent screen blockage.
